Question 1

What is Pixart.world?

Accepted Answer

Pixart.world is a collaborative pixel art platform where users can paint pixel art on the world map.

Question 2

What inspired Pixart.world?

Accepted Answer

Pixart.world was originally inspired by Reddit's r/place event. In the process of developing the ideas, we learned about the existence of other collaborative pixel art platforms (most notably Wplace) and also took inspiration from them.Pixart.world is NOT just a clone or a simple copycat of any other platform. We built Pixart.world from scratch with many fundamentally different ideas and features, aiming to fix some deeply rooted problems that the other platforms are facing, improving the overall user experience.

Question 3

What are the fundamentally different ideas that you talked about?

Accepted Answer

Everyone has their own space on Pixart.world.When you place a pixel on the map, it won't be written directly on the map, but it's written on your own canvases, (i.e. "artworks") which are then placed on the world map. Different pixels from different people can co-exist at the exact same spot on the map without destroying each other. In other words, no one can destroy your pixels unless you give them permission. You can paint on Pixart.world without worrying that your hours, days, or even weeks of hard work will eventually be vandalized by some random player you don't even know. It also greatly reduces the need for constant moderation and "griefing" protection.Pixels are grouped into artworks.Artworks are the basic unit of painting, representing the private spaces that you own. No individual pixel exists without being a part of some artwork. This makes it easier to see the author's intention and what they are trying to convey. It enables you to caption your drawings, and most importantly, it enables the moderators and admins to see more clearly what's going on, who painted what, and make more informed decisions. You own your artworks, but not the map. Your artworks are reserved just for you and people you give permission to. But the map is reserved for no one. Many people can place their artworks at the same position, and not all of them are guaranteed to be shown on the map. If you want to claim a specific spot, be prepared to fight for it! But instead of having to constantly repainting your artworks ("defending") like in the other platforms, here you may have to make sure your artwork's Elevation is high enough to stay on top.Multiple pixel scales to choose from. By choosing to paint in larger pixels, your artworks can appear more prominent on the world map, saving on Chroma Droplet costs, and filling up large spaces will be much quicker. However, the larger your pixels are, the harder it is to make them appear on top of other pixels in case of overlap. Painting smaller pixels is a good way to increase the likelihood that your awesome artwork is fully admired by the whole world. Learn more about Pixel Scales below.

Question 4

Are there any other differences between Pixart.world and other collaborative pixel platforms?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a lot! Just to name a few features that not all platforms have:Built in Image Converter and Image Overlay (ghost image) tools.Create and share Artwork Blueprints for easy collaboration.Show your appreciation to others' artworks by giving them a heart.96-color palette which are all available to use from the startArtworks remain visible even when zoomed far out.Quickly fill a color on a whole enclosed area.Draft pixels are autosaved, so you won't lose them even if you reload the website.

Question 5

How many pixels are there in Pixart.world's global canvas?

Accepted Answer

It takes almost 4.4 trillion atomic pixels (pixels at 1x1 scale) to cover the whole world map. However, we limit the world view to exclude the Arctic and the Antarctic regions, as well as not showing the pixels on oceans and seas as you've already known, so the effective number of visible atomic pixels would be smaller than that.

Question 6

Why do you exclude the Arctic and Antarctic regions?

Accepted Answer

It's a matter of taste and preference. The way the world map is projected onto a square 2D map makes the polar regions look very distorted, taking up a disproportionately large amount of space compared to their real sizes, while there are very few human activities there to make them meaningful to most people. Therefore, I decided to cut them out from the canvas to make artworks more focused on where most of our lives happen.

Question 7

What is an artwork?

Accepted Answer

An artwork is the basic unit of painting on Pixart.world, representing a private space that you own. Every pixel you place belongs to an artwork, instead of being written directly to the global map.

Question 8

What's the benefits of grouping pixels into artworks?

Accepted Answer

Separate spaces: You have your own private layer that doesn't permanently destroy other players' pixels.Captions: You can give your artwork a caption to convey your intention.Moderation: It helps moderators and admins see more clearly who painted what and make informed decisions.Management: You can manage all pixels belonging to an artwork at once, like moving them or lifting their elevation.

Question 9

How does Pixart.world prevent griefing/vandalism?

Accepted Answer

You painted your artworkSomeone painted this over your artworkOn the map, you see your pixels being overwrittenIn reality, they co-exist as overlapping layers. Their Elevation scores determine which one is shown on top.To make your pixels visible again, you can lift your artwork's Elevation to the top, or move your artwork to another place. In any case, your pixels are never lost.

Question 10

Can I create as many artworks as I want?

Accepted Answer

No, each user starts with a limit of 10 artworks. However, there are several ways to increase this limit:Level up: Your limit increases by +1 for every level you gain.Store: You can purchase additional artwork slots in the Store for 100 Chroma Droplets each.If you reach your limit but want to start something new, you can also renounce an existing artwork to free up a slot.

Question 11

How big can my artwork be?

Accepted Answer

Currently, an artwork's dimensions can be up to 4,096×4,096. The larger the total number of pixels your artwork has, the more Chroma Droplets you will need to paint it. However, the physical dimensions do not affect the cost of lifting its Elevation.

Question 12

What are Pixel Scales?

Accepted Answer

Pixel Scale defines the physical size and resolution of your artwork's pixels. It's based on the number of atomic pixels on the map that make up a single pixel of your artwork.Scale OrderPixel ScaleArea it takes upPixel cost multiplier01×11 atomic pixel1×12×24 atomic pixels2×24×416 atomic pixels3×38×864 atomic pixels4×416×16256 atomic pixels5×532×321,024 atomic pixels6×For a full breakdown of pixel cost, see How much exactly does it cost to place a pixel?.

Question 13

What are the advantages of painting with larger Pixel Scales?

Accepted Answer

Larger pixels allow you to cover up massive areas of the global map much faster. It is a great way to establish a large physical presence quickly while saving on the Chroma Droplet costs. For example, if you paint a "32×32" artwork, each of your pixels will take up a 32×32 grid of atomic pixels on the map, covering 1,024 atomic pixels, while spending only 6 Chroma Droplets instead of 1,024, saving over 99% of the cost.

Question 14

Are there any downsides to using larger pixels?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there are several significant strategic drawbacks to balance their size:Larger scales cost more Chroma Droplet to place, although this is offset by the fact that you need to place much fewer pixels to cover the same areaThey also start with a lower initial ElevationLifting their elevation is exponentially more expensive (see Elevation section)

Question 15

What is an "atomic pixel"?

Accepted Answer

An atomic pixel is the smallest unit of the map that can be painted on with a single color. It is a pixel at the 1×1 scale.

Question 16

What is Elevation?

Accepted Answer

Elevation is a numerical score that determines which artwork is visible when multiple artworks overlap on the map. For each atomic pixel on the map, you will only see the pixel that comes from the "top most" artwork (the one with the highest Elevation).Imagine you look at the map from the sky, and artworks are placed on the map in layers. Each layer is placed at a certain height, which is its Elevation. Artworks with higher Elevation will cover artworks with lower Elevation if they overlap each other. The covered pixels are not lost though. They're still there. You can select the covered artwork in the Detailed View panel to see them in full, including the covered pixels.

Question 17

What determines my artwork's Elevation?

Accepted Answer

There are 3 factors that determine your artwork's current Elevation:Initial Elevation: Depending on the Pixel Scale you choose, your artwork will start with a certain Elevation.Added Elevation:You can spend extra Chroma Droplets to raise your artwork's Elevation, either right at creation time or using the "Lift" button later on.Natural descent:All artworks slowly lose Elevation over time, to make room for new artworks to rise on top. So time is also a factor that affects your artwork's elevation.

Question 18

How fast/slow does my artwork's elevation descend?

Accepted Answer

All artworks slowly descend at the same rate of 1 unit of elevation every 30 days.

Question 19

What is the initial elevation of my artwork?

Accepted Answer

It is based entirely on the Pixel Scale.Pixel ScaleInitial Elevation1×1722×2404×4248×81616×161232×3210

Question 20

What will happen with my artwork when its elevation drops to 0? Will it disappear?

Accepted Answer

No, it will NOT disappear. However, it will be covered by any overlapping artwork that has an above-zero elevation.

Question 21

Can I boost my artwork elevation so it stays on top?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! You can "Lift" your artwork's Elevation by spending Chroma Droplets, either right at creation time or using the "Lift" button later on. This is how you aggressively compete for top visibility. Remember, the larger your Pixel Scale, the more expensive it is to lift.

Question 22

What is the cost to lift my artwork?

Accepted Answer

The cost to lift your artwork (where you are an Owner or a Collaborator) is proportional to the size of the pixel scale you chose.Pixel ScaleCost to Lift 1 Elevation point1×11 Chroma Droplet2×24 Chroma Droplets4×416 Chroma Droplets8×864 Chroma Droplets16×16256 Chroma Droplets32×321,024 Chroma Droplets

Question 23

Can I reduce my artwork's Elevation?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but only if you are an Owner. When creating or updating an artwork, or using the "Lift" action, an Owner can lower the artwork's Elevation by sliding the elevation slider to the left. The elevation number will turn red to indicate that it is being reduced.Reducing elevation is completely free and does not cost any Chroma Droplets. However, be careful: reducing elevation makes your artwork easier to be covered by other artworks. If you want to increase it later, you will need to spend Chroma Droplets.

Question 24

What happens if two overlapping artworks have the exact same Elevation?

Accepted Answer

Then the artwork with the smaller Pixel Scale will be displayed on top. If they also have the same Pixel Scale, the artwork that was created more recently will be displayed on top.

Question 25

When I paint, my draft pixels are shown on top of existing artworks. Does that mean my artwork will surely be on top after I submit?

Accepted Answer

No. Your draft pixels are always shown on top of existing artworks to let you see what you are painting. But once you submit, the Elevation will be considered to determine what will really be shown on top.We may add the Preview feature in the future to let you see what will really be shown on top in advance.

Question 26

What are Chroma Droplets?

Accepted Answer

Chroma Droplets are the primary resource in Pixart.world. They act as the "fuel" for most actions you can take on Pixart.world.

Question 27

What are Chroma Droplets used for?

Accepted Answer

Chroma Droplets are used to:Paint pixelsLift your artworks (boost Elevation)Move your existing artwork on the mapSet your artwork Blueprint

Question 28

How do I get Chroma Droplets?

Accepted Answer

You can't buy them directly (and you don't need to). They passively trickle into your bucket over time! You can then collect Chroma Droplets periodically from your bucket.Although you can't buy Chroma Droplets directly, you can purchase "Booster Packs" from the Store which will greatly increase the amount of Chroma Droplets you collect within a certain time period.

Question 29

What is my bucket?

Accepted Answer

The "bucket" is your personal reservoir where free Chroma Droplets are automatically generated over time. Chroma Droplets accumulate here until you manually "collect" them to add to your balance.

Question 30

How many Chroma Droplets do I get per hour?

Accepted Answer

Your account has a bucket that constantly fills up with Droplets at a steady rate of 60 per hour.

Question 31

Do my Droplets go straight into my account balance?

Accepted Answer

No, they accumulate in your bucketfirst. You must manually "collect" or empty the bucket to transfer those Droplets into your usable total balance.

Question 32

Can I collect my Droplets at any time?

Accepted Answer

Not quite. Your bucket must accumulate a minimum of 240 before you can collect them. At the default generation rate, this means you can collect approximately once every 4 hours.

Question 33

Is there a limit to how many Droplets my bucket can hold?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Your buckethas a maximum capacity. If it fills up completely, it stops generating new Droplets until you collect them. It is important to check in and empty your bucket regularly so you don't miss out.

Question 34

Can I increase my bucket capacity?

Accepted Answer

Yes! There are two ways:For each level you gain, your bucket capacity will be increased by +2, allowing longer accumulation. You can purchase "Bucket Size Upgrades" from the Store.

Question 35

Can my friends help me build my artwork?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Artworks on Pixart.world are inherently cooperative projects. They can support multiple Owners and multiple Collaborators working together on the same artwork. Moreover, not just Owners and Collaborators, anyone can contribute pixels to any artwork by proposing an edit when they see fit. The edit proposal will have to be approved by at least one Owner or Collaborator to take effect though.

Question 36

What is the difference between an Owner, a Collaborator, and a Contributor?

Accepted Answer

Collaborators can freely paint pixels on the same artwork canvas, overwriting any existing pixel. Be selective about who you invite, as they have the ability to vandalize your artwork.Owners have all Collaborator capabilities, plus administrative powers: change artwork settings, approve join requests, promote members, move the artwork, and set Blueprints.Contributors are outsiders who have contributed pixels via approved edit proposals, or used to be owners/collaborators.PermissionOwnerCollabOutsiderPaint pixels✅✅❌Review edit proposals✅✅❌Lift artwork✅✅✅Reduce elevation✅❌❌Send invites / Review requests✅❌❌Promote / Demote / Remove✅❌❌Change artwork config✅❌❌Move artwork✅❌❌Set artwork blueprint✅❌❌

Question 37

How do I join someone else's artwork?

Accepted Answer

It depends on their settings. If the artwork is open to join requests (they all are by default), you can send a "Join Request" and ask to be an Owner or a Collaborator. If it is private, you will need to be privately invited by an existing Owner.

Question 38

Can I add a pixel to an artwork I'm not a member of?

Accepted Answer

Yes you can, but it requires approval. You can submit an Edit Proposal.

Question 39

Whose Chroma Droplets will be used when I submit an edit proposal?

Accepted Answer

Yours. When you submit an edit proposal, your Chroma Droplets are temporarily locked. If the artwork's active members approve it, your edit goes live and your Chroma Droplets are permanently spent. If they reject it, your Chroma Droplets are fully refunded.

Question 40

Who will be credited for the pixels I add via an edit proposal, if approved?

Accepted Answer

You will be credited as a Contributor to the artwork. You will also gain the EXP reward for the pixels added.

Question 41

Can I help boost the Elevation of an artwork I like, even if I'm an outsider?

Accepted Answer

Yes! You are free to boost the Elevation of any artwork on the map. The cost is the same for everyone.

Question 42

What if I no longer want to be the owner of an artwork I created?

Accepted Answer

You can choose to leave/renounce an artwork at any time, but there is one rule to prevent team projects from getting "orphaned": If you are the last remaining Owner, but there are still active Collaborators in the group, you must promote at least one Collaborator to Owner before the system will let you leave. If you are entirely alone, you can leave/renounce freely.

Question 43

What is the Leveling and EXP system?

Accepted Answer

Pixart.world features an experience (EXP) system that rewards players for participating in the world's creation and maintenance. As you gain EXP, your account levels up, unlocking permanent gameplay bonuses.

Question 44

How do I earn EXP?

Accepted Answer

You earn EXP through the following core actions:Painting Pixels: +1 EXP per pixel painted.Edit Proposals Accepted: +1 EXP per accepted pixel.Lifting Artworks: +10 EXP per added Elevation point.

Question 45

What rewards do I get for leveling up?

Accepted Answer

Each time you level up, you receive permanent, cumulative bonuses:Increased Bucket Size: +2 to your maximum Chroma Droplet capacity per level.More Artworks: +1 to the maximum number of artworks you can own simultaneously per level.Other rewards can be added in the future when more features are implemented.

Question 46

Do I need to unlock any color?

Accepted Answer

No!All 96 colors in the palette are available to everyone, and you can choose any of them when painting. However, the cost for painting one pixel depends on the "Tier" of the color you choose.

Question 47

What are the different Color Tiers and their base costs?

Accepted Answer

The color palette is divided into three categories. Each has a different base cost for an 1×1 pixel:Base Colors: Base cost of 1 Chroma Droplet per pixel.Premium Colors: Base cost of 2 Chroma Droplets per pixel.Deluxe Colors: Base cost of 3 Chroma Droplets per pixel.

Question 48

Does the Pixel Scale affect the color cost?

Accepted Answer

Question 50

What is a Blueprint?

Accepted Answer

A Blueprint is a publicly visible overlay image (a.k.a. "ghost" image) that you can set on your artwork to show the vision of what you're planning to paint. Similarly to the built-in Image Overlay tool, it can act as a guide, making it much easier for you and your team/community to collaborate on painting complex artworks pixel-by-pixel. But unlike the Image Overlay which is only visible for you on your machine, a blueprint is publicly visible to everyone who views your artwork.

Question 51

Who can set or change a blueprint?

Accepted Answer

Only the Owners of an artwork can change or remove a blueprint. Once set, the blueprint is publicly visible to everyone, including outsiders.

Question 52

How can I set the blueprint for my artwork?

Accepted Answer

Follow these steps:Ensure you have created your artwork by placing at least a single pixel and submitting it.Go to the Image Overlay panel in the bottom-right corner of the screen and set up an overlay image at the desired location. This image overlay is only visible to you on your local machine.Click the "Use as artwork blueprint" button on the Image Overlay panel, choose the artwork, and confirm. Now the image overlay will be visible to everyone viewing your artwork.

Question 53

Does it cost anything to set a blueprint?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there is a small cost in Chroma Droplets to prevent system abuse. The cost is calculated at a rate of 1 Chroma Droplet for every 10,000 pixels in the image, rounded up. For example, a 1000×1000 pixel blueprint (1 million pixels) would cost 100 Chroma Droplets.

Question 54

Are there any limits for the blueprint image?

Accepted Answer

Yes, to ensure the best performance for everyone, blueprint images cannot exceed 4,000 × 4,000 pixels in size.

Question 55

Is the blueprint permanent?

Accepted Answer

Yes and no. Blueprints are permanent if no one changes them. But Owners can remove or update the blueprint at any time as the project progresses.
